Timber Creek Overlook Trail - 1.2 Miles Round-Trip

The Timber Creek Overlook Trail runs .6 miles to an outcrop with panoramic views across the Kolob Canyons area, Pine Valley Mountain range, Timber Creek drainage and Red Butte. The trail climbs an exposed ridge and heads south to a small peak. On clear days views extend from the Kaibab Plateau (south) to the Grand Canyon's North Rim.

The best views, however, are of the Kolob Canyons area to the east. Separated by broad-mouthed finger canyons, enormous sandstone formations stand side by side and provide a glimpse into how erosive forces have sculpted this landscape.

The same forces which created these canyons also created Zion Canyon. In fact, each visible finger canyon is considered a 'mini' Zion Canyon. Notable formations visible from the trail include:

  • Horse Ranch Mountain - 8726'
  • Paria Point - 7817'
  • Beatty Point - 7520'
  • Nagunt Mesa - 7785'
  • Timber Top Mountain - 8055'

These formations are all part of the greater Colorado Plateau, which has been eroding slowly for millions of years. This location atop the plateau offers unique perspective on a macro-scale.

For those seeking to escape the heat and crowds of Zion Canyon, an excursion to the Kolob Canyons section of the park is a great destination.
